How to Grant or Deny an iOS App Access to Your Location




Many of the apps you install ask for permission to access your location - and if the app seems useful, you're going to allow it more often than not. But we tend to forget about this afterwards, and over time, you've got a dozen different apps that are asking for location information and draining out the battery. For both privacy reasons and practical concerns about battery life, this kind of usage is a problem. Or sometimes it happens you deny an app location access on first launch, but you may need to enable it later, but are not sure how to go about this.
Some apps such as Zomato only use your location when you have the app open. Others such as Google Maps use your location even in the background. There may be a legitimate reason for this. In the case of Google Maps, it provides directions even when the app is not open. But that's not the case for all apps that use your location.
The easy solution is to just turn off the GPS altogether - but this means that even important apps you rely on can't check your location. If your battery life is getting worse by the day though, or if you're just not comfortable with certain apps sharing your location data, then you can turn off location access for just those apps.
Here's how to enable or disable location access for individual apps on iPhone or iPad.


  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  2. Now scroll down to see a list of apps that seek location access.
  3. Next to each app, you will see the text NeverWhile Using, or Always. Apps that have Never written next to their names don't use your location data. While Using means that the app only accesses location data when it is on screen. Always means that the app can access location data even when it is not running.
  4. Tap any app that has Always displayed next to its name.
  5. Now tap While Using the App. This will ensure that the app doesn't use your location in the background. Some apps don't allow this option, in which case, if you don't think that the app should always access your location, change the setting to Never.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and tap System Services.
  7. Now you can see system services that use your location in the background. Find My iPhone is a useful anti-theft feature, so you should not deny it location access. You can turn the others off depending on your requirements.

How to Switch Off and Turn On iPhone, iPad With a Damaged Power Button


If you're an iPhone or iPad user, then you might not realise just how much you end up using the power on your phone. The home button is essential to navigate through your device, and the use of the volume buttons and the mute switch on the side is pretty obvious too, but if your power button stops working, you can't turn your phone off - or back on again for that matter.
It's also pretty easy to damage, with external factors such as excess humidity or dust that can make it stop working. You can get by without switching off the iOS device, but it is always good to be able to turn the phone off if needed. These simple steps to switch off the device without touching the power button could come in really handy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General > Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the section labelled INTERACTION and tap on AssistiveTouch.
  4. On the next screen, toggle AssistiveTouch to the green On position.
  5. A white circle with a grey box will appear on screen. Tap this circle to expand it to a big box on screen.
  6. Tap Device.
  7. Tap and hold Lock Screen until the red-and-white power icon appears on screen with the text slide to power off next to it.
  8. Slide the power icon to the right to switch off the iPhone or iPad.
That takes care of switching the device off, but what do you do if you want to turn it back on? If the power button is damaged, how else can you switch on an iOS device? The answer is - charge the device. Yes, just connect it to a power socket or to a USB port on any computer. The device will turn back on in a few seconds. As soon as the white screen with the Apple logo appears, you can disconnect the charger or USB cable.

How to Add Touchscreen Home Button on iPhone, iPad



The home button is the biggest button on iOS devices and probably the most important one. It's a great example of what makes the iPhone and iPad so easy to use - that single button will always take you to the homescreen no matter what you're doing. On many Android devices, home is a software button that disappears inside apps, leaving you feeling stuck, but the physical home button on iOS devices is always there. At the same time, power users can double and triple tap the button for additional functions.
Unfortunately, this extensive usage means that the home button can become unresponsive. This can really make using the device frustrating, particularly if you're using an older device that doesn't support gestures. If you're facing the same problem, then you should enable the software home button option on your iOS device. This is how you do it:
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General > Accessibility
  3. Scroll down to the section labeled INTERACTION and tap on AssistiveTouch.
  4. On the next screen, toggle AssistiveTouch to the green On position.
  5. A white circle with a grey box will appear on screen. Tap this circle to expand it to a big box on screen. The square Home button at the bottom of the box functions exactly like the physical home button - you can use it to single tap, double tap, or long press the home button even if there is a hardware problem. The grey box remains visible and usable in all apps.

How to improve battery life on iOS 7.1








If you've upgraded to iOS 7, you might be experiencing reduced battery life. According to multiple posts across the Web, including Apple's own tech support forum, battery life is impacted to different extents for different people. For those who are struggling to make it through a day on a single charge, here are a few tips:
Turn off all non-essentials
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are the most obvious candidates when it comes to battery depletion. If you aren't turning them off altogether when not needed, make sure your iPhone or iPad isn't unnecessarily connecting to Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth accessories by deleting them from the lists of previously paired devices.
Turning off cellular data would mean that you won't receive email notifications, Whatsapp messages or any other app alerts, but it will also vastly improve your battery life expectancy. To do this, go to Settings > Cellular and move the Cellular Data slider to the left, switching it off.
For a less drastic approach, you can decide which individual apps are allowed to send and receive data when your phone is idle. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh to selectively choose which apps are allowed to refresh themselves using your Internet connections.
Apple's mobile OS also uses background data transfers for things like syncing iTunes purchases, iCloud backups, and Photo Stream. Turn these off if you don't need them - of course iCloud is pretty handy, so don't kill this unless you really need to.
App notifications also require Internet access, so turning some of these off will help you manage power consumption. Go to Settings > Notification Center and disable spam magnets such as games and commercial apps.


AirDrop doesn't require Internet access, but it could be using your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios to check for compatible devices near you. Turn it off via the Control Center, which is accessed by flicking upwards from the bottom of the screen.
While you're in the settings, go to Privacy > Location Services and check which apps have recently used GPS. Turn off location services for apps that don't need it, such as promotional ones that try to detect when you're near a brand outlet.
Another very simple thing to do is to manually exit apps that are running in the background just to be sure they aren't silently wasting energy when they aren't supposed to.
Dispense with the eye candy
iOS 7 famously introduced a number of visual effects, including animations for most screen transitions and wallpaper that shifts around as you tilt your device. These can be turned off from Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion.
Of course, one of the easiest ways to manage power is to turn the screen brightness down. Control Center makes it quick and easy to adjust brightness on demand, so you can turn it up only when needed, and make sure that the automatic settings isn't too wasteful.

Reset, Restore, Reinstall
If none of these tricks work, or if you're sure that battery usage is way above normal, you can always try resetting your phone. In some cases, users who upgraded to iOS 7 and/or 7.1 on their devices themselves reported improvements after resetting and restoring via iTunes on a computer.
The least disruptive step is to reset all settings, via Settings > General > Reset. This will leave all your apps and data intact. Choosing Erase All Content and Settings instead will reset your phone to factory condition. For a full reset, plug your device into a PC or Mac and use iTunes to reset it. Doing this will install a fresh copy of iOS 7.1 on your device.
Final words
More importantly than any of this, charge your device only when necessary and don't leave it plugged in long after it reaches 100 percent. Cycle the battery completely every now and then, and allow the device to cycle a few times after the iOS 7.1 update so that the battery indicator is properly calibrated.

How to Prolong the Battery Life of Your Smartphone, Tablet, and Laptop




Does the battery on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop not last very long? If the device is older than a year, short battery life could be the sign of an ageing battery. You can either opt to get the battery replaced or follow certain tips to maximise the battery life. However, there's no reason for you to start doing this only when you experience trouble - for best results, implement these practices from day one.
Battery life is a tricky subject and everyone has different advice so we checked various battery guides from experts who have performed extensive tests to back their claims. We also looked at the advice the manufacturers have to offer. Here's what you need to know to prolong the health of your device's battery.
The basics
Before you follow the guide, it's important to know a few facts. Our smartphones, tablets and laptops use lithium-ion batteries. These batteries will lose capacity over time. You can delay this process by taking the measures listed below but you can't stop it entirely. Batteries are designed to retain up to 80 percent of their capacity for a limited number of charge cycles. This number will be slightly higher for bigger, more expensive batteries, typically found in tablets or laptops. For instance, Apple claims that the iPhone can hold 80 percent of its capacity for 500 charge cycles, while the number is 1,000 for iPad and MacBook models. The exact number will vary across devices but this is a fair benchmark.
We hear you ask, "What's a charge cycle?" The battery completes one charge cycle when you charge it to 100 percent and drain it to 0. If you charge it to 50 percent and then drain it completely, you only complete half a charge cycle. The reality is a little more complicated than that, but it's a good general rule of thumb. That means that you can't avoid charge cycles by bringing your phone back to 100 percent whenever it hits 90 - ten such charges will count as a charge cycle.
Prolonging battery life
You can't change the laws of physics, but you can reduce the damage it receives on a day to day basis in the course of regular use. You just need to be aware of a few simple things like the temperature and the level of charge on your phone. Here's a checklist you should keep in mind, to keep your batteries healthy for as long as possible.
1. Mind the temperature
The temperature has a big impact on your device's battery. If you live in places where the temperature is above 35 degrees Celsius or below 0 degrees Celsius, battery capacity is going to reduce faster. Try and keep the phone or tablet out of direct sunlight, or exposing it to below freezing temperatures, when possible. Extreme heat affects battery capacity a lot more than extreme cold, but both are harmful. Battery University has an excellent guide on prolonging battery health, with a table (see below) to illustrate the effect of temperatures on battery capacity.

2. Partial discharge vs. Full discharge
While you may have heard about letting your device getting fully discharged before plugging in the charger, generally speaking partial discharge cycles are better than full discharge cycles. Not all lithium-ion batteries show these symptoms, but keeping the charge in the 40 to 80 percent range is generally helpful. That means charge your phone when it reaches 40 percent charge, and stop charging it when the battery reaches 80 percent, though you'll need to balance this - and all other advice - with practical usage. So when you are heading out and won't be near a charger for a while, of course charge your device to 100 percent, instead of obsessing about numbers.
3. Don't leave it plugged in all the time
Leaving your devices plugged in at 100 percent is also harmful for battery life. Battery University says overcharging is not good for the battery: "Avoiding full charge has benefits, and some manufacturers set the charge threshold lower on purpose to prolong battery life... Li-ion cannot absorb overcharge, and when fully charged the charge current must be cut off. A continuous trickle charge would cause plating of metallic lithium, and this could compromise safety."
While this advice may be easier to follow with smartphones, and especially tablets, it may not always be practical for laptops. If you are someone you leaves the laptop plugged in all the time, it's going to harm your battery in the long term. It's better to make sure that you're discharging it down to 40 percent every once in a while. On the other hand, discharging the laptop as soon as the battery hits 100 percent will use up your charge cycles sooner, which is not ideal in the long run. The best option is to be practical. Discharge it occasionally, but don't do it so religiously that your laptop is low on power when you are, say, stepping out for a meeting and might need that extra bit of juice.
4. Avoid using ultra-fast chargers
Some devices can be charged faster using certain ultra-fast chargers, but that's not good for your device's health in the long term. Battery University gives sound advice on this topic: "An analogy can be made with an underpowered engine pulling a large vehicle; the stress is too large and the engine will not last."
5. Do not use knock-off chargersYou can get a knockoff charger on the road for Rs. 50, and use it to charge a phone you paid more than Rs. 50,000 for, but we'd advise against it unless you're willing to risk damaging your battery or, worse, actual injury. Apple even had a third party charger trade-in programme to ensure that customers use original chargers.
5. Medium- to long-term storage
If you're not using your device for a while, then you should try to keep the battery at around 50 percent before turning it off. If you're going for a long trip and want to leave your phone in storage, most manufacturers recommend that you should keep it in a cool place (the recommended temperature is under 32 degrees Celsius) and ideally, keep the battery at the halfway mark.
Apple's battery guide mentions that if you plan to store the device for longer than six months, you should charge it to 50 percent every six months. This is something you should do regardless of the brand of the device you are using.
Unfortunately, there's no avoiding the fact that batteries have a finite life, after which they will certainly degrade. Following these basic tips can help delay the inevitable.

How to Make and Answer Calls, Send and Receive SMS From Your iPad, Mac






One of the headline features of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite is their ability to share phone calls and text messages. You can make calls and send text messages from both iPad and the Mac if you've updated to the latest versions of the software. This is incredibly convenient if you're wedded to the Apple ecosystem - you no longer have to switch devices just to answer a phone call. The ability to share phone calls is one of our favourite iOS 8 features and it is easy to set up too. Here's how you can start making and receiving phone calls on your iPad and Mac.
What you need
Any iPhone or iPad that can run iOS 8.1 or Mac that runs OS X Yosemite. You can share phone calls using iOS 8, but you will need to update to iOS 8.1 to send and receive SMS from your iPad and Mac.
How to make and receive phone calls across devices
It's quite simple to share phone calls between your Apple devices. You need to ensure a few things first. These are:
1. All of your devices are connected to the same WiFi network.
2. You have signed in to the same iCloud account on all your devices.
3. You've signed in to FaceTime using the same iCloud account on all devices.
4. Your devices are near each other and have Bluetooth switched on.
Once these things are set up, this is what you need to do.
1. On your iPhone and iOS, go to Settings > FaceTime > iPhone Mobile Calls > On.
2. On your Mac, Open FaceTime > Preferences > check iPhone Cellular Calls.
3. To enable text message forwarding to your iPad or Mac, On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding > On. Note, this option will appear only when there is a compatible iOS or Mac device connected to the same Wi-Fi network. You can toggle which device(s) you want the messages forwarded to.
4. Your other Apple devices will display a code that you need to key in on your iPhone to enable text message Continuity.
That's it. Now you're ready to start making and receiving calls and sending text messages from any of your iOS or Mac devices. Just pull up a contact and hit the call or message button.

How to Enable and Use Continuity, Handoff Features on iPhone, iPad, and Mac







One of the best new features on iOS and Mac is the ability to seamlessly switch between your Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch (5th generation). Continuity allows you to make and answer calls, send and receive text messages via your iPad, iPod touch (5th generation) and even your Mac. It also lets you pick up where you left off with supported apps and easily share a mobile Internet connection across Apple devices. If you compose a document in Pages or edit a photo on your Mac, you can continue it immediately from other Apple devices.
If your device supports Continuity, the feature is enabled by default. But if you haven't been able to use it yet, here's what you need and how it works.
What is Continuity
Continuity primary comprises these four features:
1. Handoff: The ability to pick up where you left off with apps. Whether it's wrapping up an unfinished message on Mail or a document in Pages, these automatically sync across Apple devices with Handoff. Third-party developers can add this feature to their apps too, though remember it won't work for third-party apps unless they have been explicitly updated to support Handoff across various devices.
2. Instant Hotspot: Lets your Apple devices share a mobile Internet connection easily. You don't need to enter a password to connect to the hotspot as long as your devices support this feature.
3. Phone calls: You can make and receive phone calls using any supported Apple device.
4. Text messages: In addition to sending iMessages like you always have, you can now also send and receive text messages using any supported Apple device.
Will it work on my Apple device?
Handoff and Instant Hotspot work on the following devices running iOS 8.1 or above:
1. iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6 and 6 Plus
2. iPhone 4s (only for sharing iPhone calls)
3. iPad (4th gen), iPad Air, iPad Air 2
4. iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPad mini 3
5. iPod touch (5th generation)
And the following Macs running OS X Yosemite:
1. MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and later)
2. MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
3. iMac (Late 2012 and later)
4. Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)
5. Mac Pro (Late 2013)
The other Continuity features will run on any device that supports iOS 8.1 or OS X Yosemite.
How to setup Continuity
You need to ensure four things before you can use all Continuity features. These are:
1. All of your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
2. You have signed in to the same iCloud account on all your devices.
3. You've signed in to FaceTime using the same iCloud account on all devices.
4. Your devices are near each other and have Bluetooth switched on.
When you've done these things, Continuity will work because it is enabled by default. Here's how to manually enable all features, in case of any issues.
Handoff
1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps > On.
2. On your Mac, go to System Preferences > General > check Allow Handoff.
Once you've done this, and, say, you are composing an email on your iPhone and have the Mac nearby, Mail will show up in the Dock. Clicking on this will let you continue composing the email exactly where you left off without having to save a draft first on your iPhone, then finding it on the Mac and so on.
Conversely, if you start something on the Mac, an icon will pop up on your iPhone or iPad and you can tap it to quickly finish the task. At launch, Handoff works with Apple apps like Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, and Contacts, but a host of third-party apps should add support soon.
Instant Hotspot
1. Settings > Personal Hotspot > On. You can do this on your iPhone or an iPad.
2. Now the mobile Internet connection will show up as a hotspot on your Apple devices. You can connect to it without entering the password, as long as you meet requirements like proximity and being signed in with the same Apple ID.

How to Find Your Lost Phone




Ever felt that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you realise that you can't find your phone?
You got yourself a brand new smartphone and took it with you on your daily commute. Somewhere along the way, the phone goes missing. Everyone knows someone who has been in this situation. It can be very tough to deal with that because we rely on our phones for so many things. It could happen to anyone, at anytime, but if it does, you're just stuck worrying: "how can I find my phone?"
But if you've been following our guides, you would have already made a backup of your contacts so you're prepared for the worst case scenario - that the phone is gone for good.
But before you start shopping for your next handset, there are a few things you can still try. All major smartphone platforms offer an easy, built-in method to track your device when it's not with you, and they are extremely effective too.
iPhone
Apple's Find My iPhone service can track a phone's physical location, and more. But it needs to be switched on - hopefully, if you've already lost your phone, then Find My iPhone was already on, but if you still have the phone with you, the first thing you want to do is turn this setting on.
  1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone.
  2. Make sure that the switch next to Find My iPhone is in the green on position.
You can now track your iOS device using an app on another iPhone or iPad, or using the browser. This is how the app works:
  1. Download the Find My iPhone app on your iOS device.
  2. Sign in with your iCloud account - the same one you're using on the iPhone you're trying to find.
  3. Now all the devices that are signed in to that iCloud account will be listed in the app.
  4. Tap any device to see its location.
In case you've misplaced the iPhone, then this should help you track it down, but you will see some more options at the bottom of the screen which you can use.
You will see three buttons at the bottom - Play Sound, Lost Mode and Erase iPhone - or iPad, as the case may be.
  1. Play Sound will play a loud alarm tone that will help you find your iOS device if it is nearby.
  2. Tapping Lost Mode opens up a page where you need to set a 4-digit passcode to lock your iOS device if it doesn't have one already. If it already has a passcode, then you can use this button to lock the phone remotely, so other people can't use it.
  3. In Lost Mode, you can also enter a phone number and a message that will be displayed on the lockscreen. You can enter messages like, "Hello, please return my iPhone. Contact me now". You can also track your device this way.
  4. The Erase iPhone (or Erase iPad) button deletes all the data on the the iOS device, in case you're worried about sensitive data falling into the wrong hands. However, you won't be able to use Find my iPhone to physically track the phone after you erase it.
The features mentioned above are accessible via the Web too. Just head to iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID. The steps and buttons are the same otherwise.

Android
The Android Device Manager works similarly to Find My iPhone. You can either use the device manager on the Internet, or download the app, to use from another Android device. The tracking is on by default. This is how you use it:
  1. Sign in with your Google Account - the same one as the missing phone.
  2. Now you'll see your Android device on the top left.
  3. If it isn't the one you're looking for, click the tiny down arrow next to the device name and select the correct device from the list.
This shows you the location of your missing device, but again, there are three options you can chose from: Ring, Lock and Erase.
  1. Clicking Ring will make your device ring - useful for finding the phone if it is nearby - just missing in your home or office, for example.
  2. Click Lock if you've lost your phone.
  3. In the pop-up, enter a new password, and click on Confirm. You can also enter a recovery message and your phone number. These will be displayed on the lost device.
  4. Click Lock when you're done to lock the device remotely.
  5. To locate the device, click the GPS icon on the top-right of the box, next to the pencil icon. You need to have location access enabled on your Android device for this feature to work. The device can now only be unlocked using the password you just set.
  6. The Erase button performs a factory reset on your device, which is important if you believe you can't recover the phone. But once you do this, then much like Find My iPhone, the Android Device Manager will also not work.
If you have an Android device, you can also track your lost device using the Android Device Manager app - after you log in with the same Google account as the missing device, the steps are the same.

BlackBerry 10
The BlackBerry Protect service also has these same features, but you'll need to turn BlackBerry Protect and its tracking service on first. If you haven't lost your phone yet, make sure these settings are on.
  1. Go to Settings > BlackBerry Protect.
  2. Flip the BlackBerry Protect switch to On.
  3. Tap Location Services.
  4. Flip the Location Services switch to On.
  5. Tap Back to save changes.
To find your missing phone, just follow these steps:
  1. Click View Location.
  2. If the service can find your phone, its location will appear on a map.
As with the other
  1. You can click the Play Sound button to make your phone ring loudly. This will help you find it when you've forgotten the phone behind the couch cushions.
  2. Display a Message lets you show a custom message on your homescreen even if the device is locked
  3. Lock Device lets you set a new password, and locks the phone.
  4. Wipe Device performs a factory reset, but once you do this, you can't track the phone again.
Windows Phone
Windows Phone users also need to make sure that the Find My Phone setting is enabled on their devices, so the first thing to do is turn that on now, when you still have your phone.
  1. On your phone go to Settings > Find My Phone.
  2. Check Use push notifications... and Save my phone's location periodically and before the battery runs out to make it easier to find.
  3. Go to Settings > Location and flip the switch to On.
Now, you can use the browser on your computer or another device to find your phone if you misplace it or lose it in any other way. This is what you need to do:
  1. Head to the Windows Phone website and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. Your Windows Phone device will show up at the top.
  3. Click Find My Phone to locate your device.
  4. If you haven't checked Use push notifications... mentioned in step 2, Microsoft will ask you to set up SMS based alerts. If you are in India, you need to scroll down all the way and select "Bharat" written in Devnagri script.
  5. If you are setting up SMS alerts, enter your phone number, click the check box below and click Done.
  6. Clicking Find My Phone (above the map) will locate the device on the map.
After you've found your phone on the map, you can carry out certain functions, as with the other platforms.
  1. Ring makes the phone ring, so you can locate it if it is nearby.
  2. Lock asks you for a new password, and locks the phone, so other people can't use it.
  3. Erase deletes all data on the phone, but you can't track it after this.
